Springwood

Springwood_LOC.jpg

Springwood, FDR's childhood home, as it appeared in 1941. Ownership of the site was transferred to the Government in 1946.

Springwood was built some time in the 1800s, although the exact date is unknown. Franklin's father, James, purchased the 110 acre property in 1867 for $40,000. After being widowed, James remarried Sara Delano and in 1882, FDR was born. For years, Springwood only housed the immediate family and a few servants, but as FDR and Eleanor started their own family, the space became cramped very quickly. In 1915, FDR added to the home, nearly doubling it in size.
